Note: This is an illustrative case study. It is a composite scenario built from common career-switch patterns, not the story of a specific person, and is shared to show a practical approach you can follow.
The starting point
Our designer had four years of experience creating social media creatives, brochures and brand identities for an agency. The work was strong visually, but growth had slowed and most new opportunities they wanted were in product companies. The goal: move from graphic designer to product designer within six months without leaving the current job.
The challenge
No experience with user research or usability testing
A portfolio full of posters and logos, with no product flows
Limited Figma experience beyond basic layouts
Applications to product roles were receiving few responses
The approach: a six-month reskilling roadmap
Instead of trying to learn everything at once, the plan focused on one skill block per month and turned each block into portfolio material.

Month 1: UX fundamentals
Learning centred on user-centred design, information architecture and basic research methods. Five informal user interviews with friends who used food-delivery apps became the seed of the first case study.
Month 2: Tools and systems
The designer moved fully into Figma, learning auto layout, components, variants and interactive prototypes. Existing visual skills became an advantage here: typography and colour decisions were already strong.
Months 3–4: Two end-to-end case studies
The first project redesigned a checkout flow for a grocery app concept. The second designed an appointment-booking flow for a small clinic, including usability tests with six participants. Each case study documented the problem, research insights, rejected ideas and the final solution.
Month 5: Portfolio and resume rewrite
The brand work was not deleted. It was condensed into a single "Visual and brand design" section, signalling a rare combination: a product designer with strong brand craft.

Month 6: Targeted job search
Rather than applying to every opening, the designer used Acrapath job alerts for product designer and UI/UX roles in consumer apps and SaaS, and focused on around 25 well-matched roles. Each application led with the most relevant case study.
The outcome
In this scenario, the designer received interview calls from several product teams and accepted a product designer role at a consumer app company. Interviewers consistently mentioned two things: the clarity of the case studies and the visual polish carried over from brand work.

Frequently asked questions
Can a graphic designer become a UX or product designer?
Yes. Graphic designers already have strong visual skills. Adding user research, interaction design, prototyping and case-study storytelling makes the transition achievable, often within six to twelve months of focused effort.
What skills does a graphic designer need to learn for product design?
Key skills include user research, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping in tools such as Figma, usability testing, design systems and the ability to explain design decisions with data and user insight.
Should I remove graphic design work from my portfolio when switching to UX?
Not entirely. Lead with UX case studies, then keep a short section of your best brand and visual work. It shows a valuable combination of product thinking and visual craft.
Is this case study based on a real person?
No. It is an illustrative composite scenario built from common career-switch patterns. It is meant to show a practical, repeatable approach rather than report a specific individual’s results.
